Exceptional Compression

HEIC stores twice as many images as JPEG in the same space — your POTM slide exports are compact yet visually sharp.

Apple Ecosystem

HEIC is the default photo format on iOS and macOS. Converted slides integrate seamlessly into the Apple Photos library and iCloud.

Cloud Processing

Rendering happens on Convertio servers. No HEVC encoder or Apple hardware is needed — convert from any browser on any platform.

About formats

POTM (PowerPoint Template with Macros) is a macro-enabled template format for Microsoft PowerPoint, introduced with Office 2007 as part of the Office Open XML family. POTM combines the template functionality of POTX — providing reusable slide masters, layouts, themes, and design foundations — with the ability to embed VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) macro code that executes in presentations created from the template. The format is a ZIP archive containing the standard XML parts for slide masters, layouts, and themes, plus a vbaProject.bin stream housing the VBA project. This combination enables organizations to distribute not just visual consistency but also functional automation: every presentation created from a POTM template inherits both the design system and the programmatic capabilities built into it. Common use cases include templates that automatically populate slides with data from corporate systems, enforce content approval workflows, insert standardized disclaimer slides, or provide custom ribbon tabs with organization-specific tools. One advantage is embedded workflow automation — a POTM template can include initialization macros that configure the presentation environment, add custom menu options, and connect to external data sources the moment a new presentation is created from it. The distinct .potm extension serves a security purpose as well, enabling administrators to apply differentiated trust policies for macro-containing templates versus standard POTX files. POTM is supported exclusively in Microsoft PowerPoint desktop editions where VBA execution is available.

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's branded implementation of the HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) standard that uses HEVC (H.265) as its image compression codec. Apple adopted HEIC as the default photo format on iPhones and iPads starting with iOS 11 in September 2017, replacing JPEG for newly captured images. HEIC files store photographs compressed with the intra-frame coding mode of the HEVC video codec, which applies sophisticated prediction, transform, and entropy coding techniques that achieve roughly 50% better compression than JPEG at equivalent visual quality. The ISOBMFF (ISO Base Media File Format) container supports multiple images in a single file, enabling Live Photos (a still plus a short video clip), burst sequences, depth maps from dual-camera systems, and HDR gain maps that allow compatible displays to render extended dynamic range. HEIC also stores alpha channels, auxiliary images for computational photography features (portrait mode depth data, semantic segmentation masks), and comprehensive EXIF/XMP metadata. One advantage is storage efficiency: iPhones shooting HEIC use roughly half the storage of equivalent JPEG captures with no visible quality loss, a significant benefit on devices where storage is finite and photos accumulate rapidly. The format's integration with Apple's ecosystem is another key strength — HEIC files are natively supported across macOS, iOS, iPadOS, and iCloud Photos, and automatic JPEG transcoding during file sharing ensures compatibility when sending photos to non-Apple devices. HEIC can also be opened by Windows 10/11 (with codec), GIMP, ImageMagick, and Adobe Lightroom.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert POTM to HEIC?

HEIC produces images roughly half the file size of JPEG at the same visual quality — great for storing slide snapshots on Apple devices or sharing efficiently.

What devices support HEIC?

iPhones, iPads, and Macs handle HEIC natively. Windows 10/11 supports it via the HEIF extension. Android 9+ also reads HEIC files.

Does HEIC support transparency?

Yes — the HEIF container used by HEIC supports alpha channels, so slides with transparent backgrounds convert correctly.

What happens to my file after conversion?

Your uploaded POTM file and the resulting HEIC output are automatically deleted from the server within 24 hours to protect your data.

Can HEIC store multiple images?

Yes — HEIC supports image sequences within a single file. However, each POTM slide is typically exported as a separate HEIC image.

Is the conversion free?

Convertio converts POTM to HEIC for free. Premium plans support larger files and higher conversion volumes.
