Best-in-Class Compression

AVIF uses the AV1 codec to deliver stunning visual quality at a fraction of the file size. POTM slide exports are sharper and smaller than JPG or WEBP.

Growing Compatibility

AVIF support spans Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and major mobile platforms. Your converted slides are viewable across the modern web ecosystem.

Cloud Encoding

AV1 encoding runs entirely on Convertio servers. No codec installation or specialized hardware needed — just upload and download.

About formats

POTM (PowerPoint Template with Macros) is a macro-enabled template format for Microsoft PowerPoint, introduced with Office 2007 as part of the Office Open XML family. POTM combines the template functionality of POTX — providing reusable slide masters, layouts, themes, and design foundations — with the ability to embed VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) macro code that executes in presentations created from the template. The format is a ZIP archive containing the standard XML parts for slide masters, layouts, and themes, plus a vbaProject.bin stream housing the VBA project. This combination enables organizations to distribute not just visual consistency but also functional automation: every presentation created from a POTM template inherits both the design system and the programmatic capabilities built into it. Common use cases include templates that automatically populate slides with data from corporate systems, enforce content approval workflows, insert standardized disclaimer slides, or provide custom ribbon tabs with organization-specific tools. One advantage is embedded workflow automation — a POTM template can include initialization macros that configure the presentation environment, add custom menu options, and connect to external data sources the moment a new presentation is created from it. The distinct .potm extension serves a security purpose as well, enabling administrators to apply differentiated trust policies for macro-containing templates versus standard POTX files. POTM is supported exclusively in Microsoft PowerPoint desktop editions where VBA execution is available.

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a modern image format derived from the AV1 video codec, developed by the Alliance for Open Media and specified in February 2019. The format leverages the intra-frame coding tools of AV1 — a royalty-free video codec backed by Google, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Netflix, and other major technology companies — to compress still images with substantially higher efficiency than JPEG, PNG, or even WebP. AVIF stores images in the HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) container, supporting both lossy and lossless compression, HDR (high dynamic range) with wide color gamuts up to 12-bit depth, alpha transparency, and animated sequences. At equivalent visual quality, AVIF files are typically 30-50% smaller than WebP and 50-70% smaller than JPEG, representing the largest compression improvement in mainstream image formats in over a decade. One advantage is exceptional compression efficiency — AVIF delivers visually indistinguishable images at dramatically lower file sizes, directly reducing bandwidth consumption and improving page load times for web content. The royalty-free licensing model provides another key strength: unlike HEIC/HEIF which relies on patent-encumbered HEVC, AVIF's AV1 foundation is free for anyone to implement without licensing fees. Browser support has reached broad adoption, with Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge all rendering AVIF natively. The format is rapidly gaining adoption for web images where quality-to-size ratio is paramount.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert POTM to AVIF?

AVIF achieves file sizes up to 10 times smaller than JPEG at comparable quality — the most efficient image format available for web and storage.

What browsers support AVIF?

Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Safari 16+ display AVIF natively. Browser support continues to expand rapidly across all major platforms.

Does AVIF support HDR content?

Yes — AVIF supports Standard Dynamic Range, High Dynamic Range, and Wide Color Gamut. Slides with rich colors benefit from the expanded palette.

Is my POTM file safe during conversion?

Uploaded POTM files are deleted immediately after conversion. AVIF output files are removed from servers within 24 hours for your privacy.

How does AVIF compare to WEBP?

AVIF generally outperforms WEBP in compression efficiency, especially at lower bitrates. Both are modern web formats, but AVIF uses the newer AV1 codec.

Is POTM to AVIF conversion free?

Yes — Convertio offers this conversion for free. Premium plans support larger uploads and higher throughput for professional use.
