About formats

JPG is the most common file extension for images compressed with the JPEG standard, published by the Joint Photographic Experts Group as ISO/IEC 10918-1 in September 1992. The three-letter .jpg extension became dominant due to the 8.3 filename limitation of MS-DOS and early Windows, while .jpeg is the full-length variant — both extensions represent identical file contents and compression. JPEG applies lossy compression using the discrete cosine transform (DCT), dividing images into 8x8 pixel blocks, transforming them into frequency coefficients, quantizing to discard visually insignificant data, and entropy-coding the result. Users control the compression level: higher quality retains more detail at larger file sizes, while lower quality achieves dramatic size reduction with increasing visible artifacts in complex textures. The format supports 24-bit true color (16.7 million colors) and 8-bit grayscale, with Exif metadata embedding camera model, exposure settings, orientation, GPS location, and creation timestamp. PFM (Portable Float Map) is a floating-point raster image format devised by Paul Debevec around 2001, designed to store high-dynamic-range image data with the simplicity of the Netpbm family of formats. PFM extends the PBM/PGM/PPM philosophy — minimal header, raw data, no compression — to 32-bit IEEE floating-point samples, providing direct access to HDR pixel values without the encoding overhead of formats like OpenEXR or the limited range of Radiance HDR's RGBE encoding. The file structure is deliberately minimal: a two-character magic number ('Pf' for grayscale, 'PF' for color), width and height on the next line, a scale/endianness indicator (negative for little-endian, positive for big-endian, with magnitude indicating scale factor), and then the raw 32-bit float data for each pixel.
