One advantage is unmatched device compatibility — JPG is the native output format of virtually every digital camera and smartphone, and is displayed by every image viewer, browser, and operating system in existence. Efficient photographic compression is another strength: real-world photographs with smooth gradients and complex textures compress extremely well under DCT, typically achieving 10:1 reduction at high visual quality.
