About formats

EPUB (Electronic Publication) is an open ebook standard originally developed by the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF) and now maintained by the W3C following the organizations' merger in 2017. The first version carrying the EPUB name was approved in October 2007 as a successor to the Open eBook Publication Structure (OEBPS). An EPUB file is essentially a ZIP archive containing XHTML or HTML5 content documents, CSS stylesheets, images, fonts, and metadata organized according to the Open Packaging Format and Open Container Format specifications. The current major version, EPUB 3, supports reflowable and fixed-layout content, embedded multimedia, JavaScript interactivity, MathML equations, and rich accessibility features including semantic markup and media overlays for synchronized text and audio. A defining advantage is universal device support — unlike proprietary formats, EPUB works natively on virtually every non-Kindle e-reader, tablet, and reading application, from Apple Books and Google Play Books to Kobo and dozens of third-party apps. The reflowable text model is another core strength, automatically adapting pagination, font size, and margins to match any screen dimension and user preference. EPUB's open specification and active W3C stewardship ensure long-term preservation and vendor independence, making it the de facto standard for digital publishing across libraries, academic institutions, and commercial retailers worldwide.

WBMP (Wireless Bitmap) is a monochrome (1-bit, black and white) image format defined as part of the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) specification, developed by the WAP Forum (later consolidated into the Open Mobile Alliance) around 1998. The format was designed for the extremely constrained mobile devices of the late 1990s and early 2000s — phones with small monochrome screens, minimal processing power, and narrow bandwidth GSM data connections. WBMP uses the simplest possible encoding: a type identifier byte (always 0 for the only defined type), width and height encoded as multi-byte integers using a variable-length scheme, and the raw pixel data where each bit represents one pixel (0 for white, 1 for black) packed eight per byte. There is no compression, no metadata, and no color — the format is purely a minimal container for delivering small monochrome graphics to WAP-era mobile browsers. One advantage was extreme efficiency on constrained devices — WBMP images could be decoded with virtually zero CPU overhead and minimal memory, critical on early mobile hardware running at single-digit megahertz clock speeds. The tiny file sizes are another strength: a typical WBMP icon occupied just a few hundred bytes, practical for transfer over 9.6 kbps GSM data channels. While the WAP ecosystem has been entirely superseded by modern mobile web browsers capable of rendering full-color JPEG, PNG, and WebP images, WBMP files remain encountered in archived mobile content from that transitional era.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert EPUB to WBMP?

WBMP is a monochrome bitmap format for WAP and early mobile devices. Useful for embedded systems or testing legacy mobile display rendering.

What opens WBMP files?

GIMP, IrfanView, XnView, ImageMagick, and some legacy mobile browsers that support WAP content display WBMP images.

Is WBMP only black and white?

Yes — WBMP is a 1-bit format, meaning pure black and white only. Color and grayscale are dithered to monochrome in conversion.

Is this format still used?

Rarely — WBMP served early WAP-enabled phones. Today it is used mainly in embedded systems and legacy mobile compatibility testing.

Is EPUB to WBMP free?

Yes, the conversion is free on Convertio. Paid plans provide expanded capacity for larger files and faster processing.

Can I convert multiple EPUBs?

Yes — upload several files and convert them all to WBMP in one batch session, handling your entire queue efficiently.
