About formats

DTS (Digital Theater Systems) is a multi-channel audio codec originally engineered for cinema sound, now a staple of home theater and Blu-ray releases. Conceived by DTS, Inc. and first showcased theatrically alongside the 1993 film Jurassic Park, the technology delivers up to 5.1 discrete channels of surround sound at bit rates typically between 768 kbps and 1.5 Mbps. Unlike competing codecs that lean on aggressive psychoacoustic modeling, DTS allocates a higher data budget to each channel, preserving finer spatial detail and low-level dynamics. The format encodes audio using sub-band ADPCM combined with vector quantization, producing a perceptibly rich sound field. Its extended variant, DTS-HD Master Audio, adds a lossless extension layer for bit-for-bit accuracy up to 24-bit/192 kHz. Key strengths include broad hardware adoption across AV receivers, gaming consoles, and automotive infotainment systems, along with robust error concealment that masks minor disc or stream glitches. For anyone working with surround-sound content intended for physical media or high-end streaming, DTS provides a proven pathway from studio mix to living room.

PVF (Portable Voice Format) is a simple audio file format designed for voice message storage in Linux-based telephony systems, most notably ISDN4Linux and its vbox voicemail application. The format emerged from the European ISDN ecosystem of the late 1990s, when Linux servers increasingly handled PBX and answering machine duties over digital phone lines. PVF files store raw signed 16-bit PCM samples at 8000 Hz mono, preceded by a minimal plain-text header specifying data format and byte ordering. This deliberate simplicity is one of the format's primary strengths — with no compression and a human-readable header, PVF files are trivially easy to parse, pipe, and manipulate using standard Unix tools. The 8 kHz rate matches the Nyquist requirement for telephone-bandwidth speech (300-3400 Hz), making PVF a natural intermediate format for voice processing pipelines. Another advantage is cross-architecture portability: the explicit byte-order declaration means PVF files move between big-endian and little-endian systems without ambiguity. The SoX audio toolkit provides native PVF read/write support, enabling straightforward conversion to modern formats.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert DTS to PVF?

DTS surround audio needs re-encoding for voice systems. Converting to PVF makes it ready for telephony or VoIP use.

What programs can open PVF?

PVF is supported by Specialized telephony software and audio tools that support Portable Voice Format.

What happens to audio quality during conversion?

PVF has format-specific limitations. The converter decodes your DTS and re-encodes within PVF capabilities — results vary by format.

How many DTS files can I convert at a time?

Upload and convert multiple DTS files to PVF simultaneously — the batch feature handles them all at once without repeating steps.

Is my audio data kept private?

Uploaded DTS files are deleted immediately after conversion. The resulting PVF outputs are removed from our servers within 24 hours.

Does this work on mobile devices?

Yes. The converter is fully browser-based and works on smartphones and tablets — no app download required for DTS to PVF conversion.
