About formats

CDR is the native file format of CorelDRAW, a vector graphics editor developed by Corel Corporation and first released for Windows in January 1989. The format stores complex vector illustrations using a RIFF-based container structure (Resource Interchange File Format), organizing page content, object properties, color palettes, and metadata across multiple data chunks. CDR supports a comprehensive range of vector objects including Bezier curves, rectangles, ellipses, artistic text, paragraph text, powerclips, drop shadows, transparency lenses, contours, blends, envelopes, and multi-page document layouts. Each new major release of CorelDRAW introduces an updated CDR version, sometimes adding features that are not backward-compatible with older software versions. One notable advantage is rich feature density — CDR files can contain extremely complex artwork combining vector objects with embedded bitmap effects, multi-point color fills, and mesh fills, all within a single native document. The format's strong presence in certain professional niches is another practical strength: sign-making, screen printing, engraving, and vinyl cutting industries widely standardize on CDR as their primary working format, with direct output to cutting plotters and production equipment. While CorelDRAW originated as a Windows application and CDR remains most fully supported on that platform, import support exists in competing editors including Inkscape, Adobe Illustrator, and LibreOffice Draw.

HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) is a container format for images and image sequences standardized by the Moving Picture Experts Group as ISO/IEC 23008-12, first published in 2015. HEIF is built on the ISO Base Media File Format (ISOBMFF, the same container used for MP4 video), providing a flexible structure that can hold single images, image collections, image sequences (like animations or bursts), and derived images with non-destructive editing operations. The container is codec-agnostic — while the most common implementation pairs HEIF with HEVC/H.265 compression (branded as HEIC by Apple), the standard also accommodates AV1 compression (creating the AVIF variant), H.266/VVC, and other future codecs. HEIF supports features that JPEG lacks: 10-bit and 12-bit color depth, wide color gamuts (Display P3, BT.2020), lossless compression, alpha transparency, depth maps, thumbnail images, and Exif/XMP metadata — all within a single file. Auxiliary image items can store computational photography data like depth maps, HDR gain maps, and semantic segmentation masks. One advantage is the format's future-proof architecture: by separating the container from the codec, HEIF can adopt newer, more efficient compression technologies without changing the file structure, metadata handling, or application-level APIs. The substantial compression improvement over JPEG is another core strength — HEVC-based HEIF typically achieves 40-50% file size reduction compared to JPEG at the same visual quality, beneficial for storage and bandwidth. HEIF is supported by Apple's ecosystem (iOS, macOS), Windows 10/11, Android 10+, GIMP, ImageMagick, and Adobe products.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert CDR to HEIF?

HEIF delivers exceptional image quality at small file sizes. Converting CDR to HEIF creates modern, efficient image output.

What reads HEIF files?

Apple devices, macOS Preview, Windows 10+, GIMP (with plugin), and many modern image viewers support HEIF.

How does HEIF compare to PNG?

HEIF offers dramatically smaller file sizes than PNG while supporting both lossy and lossless compression modes.

Is CDR to HEIF free?

Free conversion available for all users. Premium plans provide enhanced capacity for professional workflows.

Does HEIF support image sequences?

Yes — HEIF can store multiple images in a single container, including image sequences and burst photos.
