About formats

CDR is the native file format of CorelDRAW, a vector graphics editor developed by Corel Corporation and first released for Windows in January 1989. The format stores complex vector illustrations using a RIFF-based container structure (Resource Interchange File Format), organizing page content, object properties, color palettes, and metadata across multiple data chunks. CDR supports a comprehensive range of vector objects including Bezier curves, rectangles, ellipses, artistic text, paragraph text, powerclips, drop shadows, transparency lenses, contours, blends, envelopes, and multi-page document layouts. Each new major release of CorelDRAW introduces an updated CDR version, sometimes adding features that are not backward-compatible with older software versions. One notable advantage is rich feature density — CDR files can contain extremely complex artwork combining vector objects with embedded bitmap effects, multi-point color fills, and mesh fills, all within a single native document. The format's strong presence in certain professional niches is another practical strength: sign-making, screen printing, engraving, and vinyl cutting industries widely standardize on CDR as their primary working format, with direct output to cutting plotters and production equipment. While CorelDRAW originated as a Windows application and CDR remains most fully supported on that platform, import support exists in competing editors including Inkscape, Adobe Illustrator, and LibreOffice Draw.

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a modern image format derived from the AV1 video codec, developed by the Alliance for Open Media and specified in February 2019. The format leverages the intra-frame coding tools of AV1 — a royalty-free video codec backed by Google, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Netflix, and other major technology companies — to compress still images with substantially higher efficiency than JPEG, PNG, or even WebP. AVIF stores images in the HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) container, supporting both lossy and lossless compression, HDR (high dynamic range) with wide color gamuts up to 12-bit depth, alpha transparency, and animated sequences. At equivalent visual quality, AVIF files are typically 30-50% smaller than WebP and 50-70% smaller than JPEG, representing the largest compression improvement in mainstream image formats in over a decade. One advantage is exceptional compression efficiency — AVIF delivers visually indistinguishable images at dramatically lower file sizes, directly reducing bandwidth consumption and improving page load times for web content. The royalty-free licensing model provides another key strength: unlike HEIC/HEIF which relies on patent-encumbered HEVC, AVIF's AV1 foundation is free for anyone to implement without licensing fees. Browser support has reached broad adoption, with Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge all rendering AVIF natively. The format is rapidly gaining adoption for web images where quality-to-size ratio is paramount.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert CDR to AVIF?

AVIF delivers cutting-edge compression — smaller files than JPEG or WEBP with equal or better visual quality for web use.

What browsers support AVIF?

Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Edge support AVIF natively. Safari added support in version 16. Coverage is excellent.

Does AVIF support transparency?

Yes — AVIF handles alpha transparency, HDR, and wide color gamut. A very capable modern image format.

Is CDR to AVIF free?

Free for all users. Premium plans unlock larger file sizes and faster processing for professional needs.

How does AVIF compare to WEBP?

AVIF generally achieves better compression than WEBP, especially at lower bitrates. Both are modern web formats.

Is AVIF widely adopted?

AVIF adoption is growing rapidly. Major browsers and platforms support it, making it increasingly safe for production use.
