About formats

APE is the file format of Monkey's Audio, a lossless compression algorithm created by Matt Ashland around 2000. The codec achieves some of the highest compression ratios among lossless encoders — typically reducing CD-quality audio to 50-60% of its original size, with an insane preset pushing further at the cost of speed. Every bit of the original waveform is preserved and perfectly reconstructable. The engine uses adaptive prediction filters and range coding to exploit redundancies in PCM audio, with multiple compression levels letting users balance processing time against file size. A standout advantage is superior compression density: tests frequently show APE files 2-5% smaller than equivalent FLAC or WavPack encodings. The format bundles robust tagging through APEv2 metadata, supporting album art, lyrics, and extensive catalog information. While platform support is narrower than FLAC — playback requires software like foobar2000 or VLC — audiophiles who prioritize storage efficiency without quality compromise continue to favor APE as their archival format of choice.

PVF (Portable Voice Format) is a simple audio file format designed for voice message storage in Linux-based telephony systems, most notably ISDN4Linux and its vbox voicemail application. The format emerged from the European ISDN ecosystem of the late 1990s, when Linux servers increasingly handled PBX and answering machine duties over digital phone lines. PVF files store raw signed 16-bit PCM samples at 8000 Hz mono, preceded by a minimal plain-text header specifying data format and byte ordering. This deliberate simplicity is one of the format's primary strengths — with no compression and a human-readable header, PVF files are trivially easy to parse, pipe, and manipulate using standard Unix tools. The 8 kHz rate matches the Nyquist requirement for telephone-bandwidth speech (300-3400 Hz), making PVF a natural intermediate format for voice processing pipelines. Another advantage is cross-architecture portability: the explicit byte-order declaration means PVF files move between big-endian and little-endian systems without ambiguity. The SoX audio toolkit provides native PVF read/write support, enabling straightforward conversion to modern formats.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert APE to PVF?

PVF is a simple portable voice format used in telephony systems. Converting from APE provides clean PCM data suitable for voice processing pipelines.

What is PVF used for?

PVF is found in PBX systems and voice processing applications where a straightforward, headerless PCM voice format is needed.

What software handles PVF?

SoX and Asterisk PBX work with PVF files. Most general-purpose audio editors can also import raw PCM data in PVF format.

Is the audio quality preserved?

PVF stores raw PCM data, so no additional quality loss occurs beyond what telephony sample rate constraints may impose.

Can I convert multiple files?

Yes — upload a batch of APE files and convert them all to PVF at once. Each processes independently.

Is the process secure?

APE uploads are deleted immediately after conversion. PVF results are removed from our servers within 24 hours.
