About formats

WPG (WordPerfect Graphics) is a mixed vector/raster image format developed by WordPerfect Corporation and introduced with WordPerfect 5.0 on May 5, 1988. The format was designed to provide a native graphics capability for WordPerfect documents, supporting both vector drawing elements (lines, curves, polygons, text with font specifications, and filled shapes) and embedded raster images in a single file. WPG exists in two major versions: WPG1, which supports 1-bit and indexed color rasters up to 256 colors with optional run-length encoding compression, and WPG2, introduced later, which added true-color (24-bit) support, OLE object embedding, and enhanced vector capabilities. The vector portion of WPG files stores resolution-independent drawing commands that can be scaled and printed at any output device's native resolution, while the raster portion handles photographic and scanned content. During WordPerfect's peak market dominance in the late 1980s and early 1990s, WPG was one of the most commonly encountered graphics formats in business and legal document workflows, used for logos, diagrams, letterheads, and clip art. One advantage is the hybrid vector/raster capability: WPG could combine scalable line art with photographic imagery in a single file at a time when most formats handled only one or the other, making it practical for the mixed-content graphics typical of business documents. Continued accessibility is another strength — WPG files remain readable by LibreOffice, Corel's current software suite (which inherited WordPerfect), ImageMagick, XnView, and Inkscape, ensuring decades-old documents remain viewable.

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's branded implementation of the HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) standard that uses HEVC (H.265) as its image compression codec. Apple adopted HEIC as the default photo format on iPhones and iPads starting with iOS 11 in September 2017, replacing JPEG for newly captured images. HEIC files store photographs compressed with the intra-frame coding mode of the HEVC video codec, which applies sophisticated prediction, transform, and entropy coding techniques that achieve roughly 50% better compression than JPEG at equivalent visual quality. The ISOBMFF (ISO Base Media File Format) container supports multiple images in a single file, enabling Live Photos (a still plus a short video clip), burst sequences, depth maps from dual-camera systems, and HDR gain maps that allow compatible displays to render extended dynamic range. HEIC also stores alpha channels, auxiliary images for computational photography features (portrait mode depth data, semantic segmentation masks), and comprehensive EXIF/XMP metadata. One advantage is storage efficiency: iPhones shooting HEIC use roughly half the storage of equivalent JPEG captures with no visible quality loss, a significant benefit on devices where storage is finite and photos accumulate rapidly. The format's integration with Apple's ecosystem is another key strength — HEIC files are natively supported across macOS, iOS, iPadOS, and iCloud Photos, and automatic JPEG transcoding during file sharing ensures compatibility when sending photos to non-Apple devices. HEIC can also be opened by Windows 10/11 (with codec), GIMP, ImageMagick, and Adobe Lightroom.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert WPG to HEIC?

Very few programs outside WordPerfect can open WPG files. Converting to HEIC makes the images universally accessible across all platforms.

What software opens HEIC?

Apple devices (iPhone, iPad, Mac), Windows 10+ (with HEIF extension), Photoshop, GIMP, and modern image viewers.

Do I need to pay for this converter?

Basic WPG to HEIC conversions are free. Convertio offers premium tiers for heavier workloads with faster processing and priority support.

Can I convert multiple WPG files at once?

Yes — Convertio supports batch uploads. Queue several WPG files and convert them all to HEIC in one session, saving time on repetitive tasks.

How long does WPG to HEIC conversion take?

Most conversions finish in seconds. Processing time depends on file size and server load, but standard images are typically converted almost instantly.

Is the original resolution preserved?

Yes — the pixel dimensions of your WPG image are maintained in the HEIC output. No downscaling or cropping happens during conversion.
