About formats

VOB (Video Object) is the primary container format used on DVD-Video discs, defined as part of the DVD specification developed by the DVD Forum. The format first appeared with the DVD standard finalized in September 1996 and has since been used on billions of DVD discs produced worldwide. VOB files are based on the MPEG-2 program stream format, containing multiplexed MPEG-2 video alongside audio in AC-3 (Dolby Digital), DTS, MPEG-1 Layer II, or LPCM formats. Beyond audio and video, VOB files also carry DVD subtitle streams as bitmap overlays, navigation data for menu interaction, and chapter point information. The files reside in the VIDEO_TS directory on a DVD disc, with naming conventions (VTS_01_1.VOB, etc.) reflecting the title and part structure of the content. Individual VOB files are limited to approximately 1 GB to accommodate the UDF file system requirements, with longer content spanning multiple files seamlessly. The format supports both NTSC (720x480) and PAL (720x576) video resolutions at bit rates up to 9.8 Mbps for combined audio and video. Integration of video, multi-track audio, subtitles, and navigation into a single program stream made VOB a complete solution for consumer movie delivery. While streaming and newer disc formats have supplanted DVD for new content, VOB remains hugely relevant for accessing the vast library of existing DVD content.

8SVX (8-Bit Sampled Voice) is an audio file format created as part of the Interchange File Format specification for Commodore's Amiga platform. Introduced around 1985 by Electronic Arts, it stores 8-bit audio samples with optional Fibonacci delta compression to reduce file sizes. The format organizes data in IFF chunks — a VHDR chunk for header information (sample rate, octave count, compression type) and a BODY chunk containing the audio payload. 8SVX powered everything from game sound effects to sampled music in tracker software across the Amiga ecosystem. One key advantage is its straightforward chunk-based architecture, which makes parsing and generation remarkably simple compared to modern containers. Another benefit is native support for one-shot samples, looping regions, and multi-octave instrument definitions within a single file, making it valuable for early music production. Although the Amiga platform has faded from mainstream use, 8SVX files remain important for retro computing enthusiasts and archivists preserving classic software and audio content.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert VOB to 8SVX?

8SVX is the native Amiga sample format — essential for retro computing, Amiga game modding, and classic multimedia projects.

What software opens 8SVX?

WinUAE, Amiga Forever, Sox, and vintage Amiga audio tools handle 8SVX files natively for playback and editing.

Is 8SVX high quality?

8SVX stores 8-bit signed PCM audio — quality reflects the Amiga era. It is authentic for retro applications but limited by modern standards.

Does 8SVX support stereo?

8SVX can hold stereo samples, though it is most commonly associated with mono 8-bit audio from the Amiga platform.

Can I convert several VOBs?

Upload a batch of VOB files and convert each audio track to 8SVX independently — all outputs download when ready.
