MTS is a file extension associated with the AVCHD recording format, jointly developed by Sony and Panasonic for high-definition consumer camcorders. Files with the MTS extension contain MPEG-2 transport stream data carrying H.264/AVC video at resolutions up to 1920x1080, paired with Dolby Digital (AC-3) or LPCM audio. The MTS designation is used when AVCHD content is accessed directly from the recording media, as opposed to M2TS files which typically refer to the same transport stream format in Blu-ray disc contexts. Consumer and semi-professional camcorders from Sony, Panasonic, Canon, and other manufacturers write MTS files into a structured directory hierarchy on memory cards or internal storage, accompanied by index and playlist files that organize clips for in-camera playback.
