About formats

RLA is a raster image format developed by Wavefront Technologies in the mid-1980s for their Advanced Visualizer 3D rendering software, which ran primarily on Silicon Graphics workstations. RLA files store rendered frames with support for multiple channels beyond standard RGB — including alpha transparency, Z-depth, surface normal vectors, object ID, material ID, and other arbitrary data channels that compositing artists use to manipulate rendered elements without re-rendering. Each scanline is independently compressed using run-length encoding, allowing efficient random access to any row without decompressing the entire image. The format supports 8-bit, 16-bit, and 32-bit floating-point per channel, making it suitable for high-dynamic-range rendering output. RLA was a staple of visual effects production throughout the 1990s, used extensively in film and broadcast VFX pipelines alongside Wavefront's Composer compositing software. The format's successor, RPF (Rich Pixel Format), extended the concept further and was adopted by Autodesk 3ds Max, but RLA remains the earlier standard. One advantage is the multi-channel rendering data: unlike simple RGB image formats, RLA files carry per-pixel depth, normal, and ID passes that enable post-render effects like depth-of-field blur, fog, re-lighting, and object-level color correction without returning to the 3D application. This pipeline efficiency made RLA essential in early visual effects production. The format is recognized by Autodesk tools, Foundry Nuke, ImageMagick, and various legacy compositing applications.

EPUB (Electronic Publication) is an open ebook standard originally developed by the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF) and now maintained by the W3C following the organizations' merger in 2017. The first version carrying the EPUB name was approved in October 2007 as a successor to the Open eBook Publication Structure (OEBPS). An EPUB file is essentially a ZIP archive containing XHTML or HTML5 content documents, CSS stylesheets, images, fonts, and metadata organized according to the Open Packaging Format and Open Container Format specifications. The current major version, EPUB 3, supports reflowable and fixed-layout content, embedded multimedia, JavaScript interactivity, MathML equations, and rich accessibility features including semantic markup and media overlays for synchronized text and audio. A defining advantage is universal device support — unlike proprietary formats, EPUB works natively on virtually every non-Kindle e-reader, tablet, and reading application, from Apple Books and Google Play Books to Kobo and dozens of third-party apps. The reflowable text model is another core strength, automatically adapting pagination, font size, and margins to match any screen dimension and user preference. EPUB's open specification and active W3C stewardship ensure long-term preservation and vendor independence, making it the de facto standard for digital publishing across libraries, academic institutions, and commercial retailers worldwide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert RLA to EPUB?

RLA was designed for 1990s VFX pipelines and lacks modern support. Exporting to EPUB lets you archive and share those renders universally.

What programs can open EPUB?

Apple Books, Calibre, Kobo readers, Adobe Digital Editions, Google Play Books, and most e-reader apps support EPUB natively.

How accurate is RLA to EPUB conversion?

EPUB preserves image data without lossy compression, so the visual content from your RLA is retained faithfully during conversion.

How quickly can I convert RLA to EPUB?

The process is fast — cloud-based processing handles RLA to EPUB conversion in seconds for standard-sized images, even on slower connections.

Can I queue several RLA files for conversion?

Absolutely. Add several RLA images at once, set EPUB as the output, and the converter processes them all in parallel for maximum efficiency.

Do I need Wavefront software to convert RLA?

No — Convertio handles RLA conversion entirely online. You do not need any Wavefront or Autodesk software installed on your machine.
