About formats

PLT is a vector file format associated with HP-GL (Hewlett-Packard Graphics Language), a plotter control language introduced by Hewlett-Packard in 1977 with the HP-9872 pen plotter. PLT files contain a sequence of two-letter ASCII commands that instruct a pen plotter to move, draw lines, select pens, and render text — commands like PU (pen up), PD (pen down), PA (plot absolute), and SP (select pen) form a straightforward instruction set that directly controls physical drawing motion. The language operates on a coordinate grid measured in plotter units (typically 0.025 mm per unit), and the resulting files read almost like machine code for a drawing device. HP-GL became the dominant standard for computer-aided design output, adopted by virtually every CAD application and supported by plotters from all manufacturers throughout the 1980s and 1990s. One advantage is universal CAD compatibility — PLT files generated by AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or any engineering software can be sent directly to plotters and cutting machines without driver translation. The text-based, human-readable command structure is another strength: engineers can inspect, edit, and hand-write PLT files to troubleshoot output or generate simple drawings programmatically. HP-GL/2, an enhanced version introduced with the HP LaserJet III in 1990, added polygon fills, Bezier curves, and raster support. PLT remains actively used in engineering, architecture, and manufacturing for large-format output.

PCX (PiCture eXchange) is a raster image format created by ZSoft Corporation in 1985 as the native format of their PC Paintbrush application, one of the first painting programs for IBM PC compatibles. The format uses a simple run-length encoding (RLE) compression scheme that works by replacing consecutive identical pixel values with a count-value pair, achieving modest compression on images with large areas of uniform color. A PCX file consists of a 128-byte header (specifying dimensions, color depth, palette information, DPI, and encoding method), the RLE-compressed pixel data organized in scan-line order, and an optional 256-color palette appended after the image data. The format evolved through several versions supporting increasing color depths: 1-bit monochrome, 4-bit (16 colors), 8-bit (256 colors), and 24-bit true color using multiple color planes. PCX became one of the most popular image formats during the DOS era, widely supported by paint programs, word processors, desktop publishers, and early games throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s. One advantage was broad DOS-era software compatibility — PCX served as a practical interchange format when competing programs used proprietary raster formats. The simplicity of RLE decoding is another strength, requiring minimal CPU and memory resources ideal for the hardware of that period. While PNG, JPEG, and other modern formats have replaced PCX in contemporary use, the format remains encountered in legacy archives and retro computing contexts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert PLT to PCX?

PCX is accepted by many legacy applications and scanning workflows — converting PLT lets you integrate plotter drawings with older systems.

What programs open PCX files?

IrfanView, XnView, GIMP, Adobe Photoshop, and many Windows image viewers support PCX format.

Does PCX use compression?

PCX uses run-length encoding (RLE), a simple lossless compression — efficient for line-heavy plotter drawings with solid areas.

Is the drawing quality preserved?

Yes — HPGL paths are rendered into pixels at the chosen resolution, and RLE compression is lossless, keeping every detail.

Is PLT to PCX free?

Convertio provides free PLT to PCX conversion. Upload, convert, and download without any fees or account creation.

Can I convert on a Chromebook?

Yes. The converter is entirely web-based and works on Chromebooks, tablets, and any device with a browser.
