About formats

ODP (OpenDocument Presentation) is the presentation file format defined by the OpenDocument Format (ODF) standard, developed by the OASIS technical committee and first published as ODF 1.0 on May 1, 2005, later adopted as international standard ISO/IEC 26300. An ODP file is a ZIP archive containing XML documents that describe presentation content, styles, metadata, and settings using a vendor-neutral, royalty-free specification. Slides are defined in content.xml using drawing and presentation namespaces, with separate files for styles, manifest, and embedded media. The format supports text frames, images, charts, tables, shapes, gradients, transparency, slide transitions, animations, master pages, and speaker notes. ODP serves as the native format for LibreOffice Impress, Apache OpenOffice Impress, and Calligra Stage, and can be imported by Microsoft PowerPoint, Google Slides, and other commercial tools. One advantage is vendor independence — ODP is governed by an open standard rather than a single company, ensuring long-term accessibility and freedom from proprietary lock-in. This makes ODP particularly valuable for government agencies, educational institutions, and organizations with digital preservation mandates. The fully documented XML structure is another strength, enabling programmatic generation and processing using any programming language with XML support. ODP is mandated or recommended as a document format by numerous national governments worldwide.

PSD (Photoshop Document) is the native file format of Adobe Photoshop, the industry-standard raster image editor first released on February 19, 1990. PSD files preserve the complete editing state of a Photoshop project: all layers (raster, text, adjustment, shape, and smart object layers) with their positions, blending modes, opacity, and layer effects; layer masks and vector masks; alpha channels; spot color channels; paths; guides; slices; and the full undo history. The format supports images up to 30,000 x 30,000 pixels (PSB, the large document format, extends this to 300,000 x 300,000) in color modes including RGB, CMYK, Lab, Grayscale, Indexed, Duotone, and Multichannel, at 1, 8, 16, or 32 bits per channel. PSD files use a combination of RLE compression for individual layer data and store composite (flattened) preview images for quick display by applications that cannot parse the full layer structure. The format has become a de facto standard for professional creative workflows far beyond Photoshop itself — photographers, graphic designers, web developers, and video post-production artists exchange PSD files as the working format that preserves creative flexibility. One advantage is the non-destructive editing model: PSD preserves every layer, mask, adjustment, and effect as independently editable elements, allowing creative decisions to be revised at any point without starting over. The format's role as the interchange standard for the creative industry provides another core strength — PSD files can be opened by Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, After Effects, Premiere Pro, as well as Affinity Photo, GIMP, Sketch, Figma, and Photopea, making it the lingua franca of visual design.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert ODP to PSD?

PSD gives you full Photoshop editing capabilities on your slide visuals — apply filters, retouch elements, composite layers, and refine graphics with professional precision.

What software opens PSD files?

Adobe Photoshop is the primary PSD editor. GIMP, Affinity Photo, Photopea, and Krita also open PSD files with varying levels of layer and feature support.

Are ODP layers preserved in PSD?

ODP slides are rasterized to flat images during conversion. The resulting PSD contains the full visual content of each slide, which you can then separate into layers manually.

Does PSD support high resolution?

PSD handles images up to 30,000 x 30,000 pixels and supports 8-bit, 16-bit, and 32-bit color depths — more than sufficient for any presentation slide rendering.

Is ODP to PSD conversion free?

Convertio offers free ODP to PSD conversions. Upgraded plans provide expanded file size limits and faster processing for high-resolution or multi-slide presentations.

Can I edit the converted PSD in Photoshop?

Absolutely — the PSD output opens directly in Photoshop. You can apply adjustments, add layers, use brushes, and access the full range of Photoshop editing tools.
