About formats

MOV is a multimedia container format developed by Apple Inc. and introduced in December 1991 with the launch of the QuickTime multimedia framework. As the native format of QuickTime, MOV pioneered many concepts that later influenced the ISO base media file format (MPEG-4 Part 12) and its derivatives, including MP4. The container uses a hierarchical atom (or box) structure where each atom holds specific types of data — from video and audio tracks to metadata, text, and timecode information. MOV supports an extremely broad range of codecs including H.264, HEVC, ProRes, Apple Intermediate Codec, AAC, and PCM, among many others. This codec flexibility, combined with features like multiple track support, reference movies, and edit lists, has made MOV a staple of professional video production. The ProRes codec from Apple, commonly delivered in MOV containers, is an industry standard for post-production and broadcast finishing. The format handles both compressed delivery-quality content and high-bit-rate production-quality footage with equal capability. Precise timecode and metadata handling make MOV particularly valued in workflows requiring frame-accurate editing and reliable exchange between production tools. MOV is natively supported across all Apple platforms and widely recognized by professional editing software on all operating systems, maintaining its relevance across decades of evolving video technology.

Sound Designer II (SD2) is a professional audio format created by Digidesign around 1988 as the successor to the original Sound Designer format. For over a decade, SD2 was the standard interchange format in professional recording studios, especially those on Macintosh systems. It stores uncompressed linear PCM audio at up to 24-bit resolution with sample rates used in professional production (44.1, 48, 88.2, and 96 kHz). A distinctive technical trait is its reliance on the classic Mac OS resource fork for critical metadata — sample rate, bit depth, and channel configuration — while audio data resides in the data fork. This design worked elegantly within the Mac ecosystem but created portability challenges when files moved to Windows or Unix. A key advantage was SD2's support for multiple channels in a single file and tight integration with the Pro Tools editing environment, enabling non-destructive region-based editing. The format also carried loop points and markers, making it valuable for sample libraries. As Avid Technology shifted Pro Tools toward WAV and AIFF, SD2 usage declined, but millions of legacy session archives still contain SD2 files needing occasional conversion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert MOV to SD2?

SD2 was the standard audio format for Digidesign Pro Tools on classic Mac OS. Convert for compatibility with legacy Pro Tools sessions and Mac audio archives.

What software opens SD2 files?

Pro Tools (older versions), Peak, SoX, and some Mac audio editors read SD2. It was widely used in professional recording studios during the 1990s and 2000s.

Is SD2 still used in studios?

SD2 has been largely replaced by WAV and AIFF in modern Pro Tools. It remains relevant for opening legacy sessions and archived studio recordings.

Does SD2 support high-res audio?

SD2 supports up to 24-bit, 96 kHz audio — plenty for professional production. It stores uncompressed data with resource fork metadata on classic Mac systems.

Is SD2 lossless?

Yes — Sound Designer 2 stores uncompressed PCM audio. The extracted audio from your MOV is preserved without any quality loss in the SD2 file.
