Cloud-Powered Speed

Conversion runs entirely on powerful servers — your device stays fast and responsive while the HDR to EPUB processing happens remotely.

Effortless Conversion

The HDR to EPUB process is streamlined to its essentials: upload, convert, download. Clean interface, zero confusion.

Lighting to Image

HDR files store luminance, not pictures. Converting to EPUB creates an actual viewable image from that lighting information.

About formats

HDR (also known as RGBE or Radiance HDR) is a high-dynamic-range image format created by Greg Ward Larson as part of the Radiance lighting simulation system, developed at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory starting in 1985 with the HDR format emerging around 1989. The format stores floating-point RGB pixel values using a compact 32-bit-per-pixel encoding called RGBE (Red, Green, Blue, Exponent): three 8-bit mantissa bytes share a single 8-bit exponent, representing luminance values across a range of roughly 76 orders of magnitude while keeping file sizes comparable to standard 24-bit images. HDR files begin with a text header containing rendering and exposure metadata, followed by the RGBE pixel data compressed with a scanline-oriented run-length encoding scheme. The format captures the full luminance range of real-world scenes — from deep shadows to direct sunlight — enabling physically accurate lighting calculations, tone mapping to different display conditions, and post-capture exposure adjustment without the clipping artifacts inherent in 8-bit formats. One advantage is the format's foundational role in HDR imaging: Radiance HDR pioneered the concept of storing real-world luminance values in image files, and the .hdr format became the standard for light probe images and environment maps used in image-based lighting across the 3D rendering industry. The format's compact encoding is another practical strength — the RGBE scheme provides far more dynamic range than 8-bit formats while using only 33% more storage per pixel, a favorable tradeoff that made HDR practical on storage-limited systems of the late 1980s. HDR files are supported by Photoshop, GIMP, ImageMagick, Blender, and all major 3D renderers.

EPUB (Electronic Publication) is an open ebook standard originally developed by the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF) and now maintained by the W3C following the organizations' merger in 2017. The first version carrying the EPUB name was approved in October 2007 as a successor to the Open eBook Publication Structure (OEBPS). An EPUB file is essentially a ZIP archive containing XHTML or HTML5 content documents, CSS stylesheets, images, fonts, and metadata organized according to the Open Packaging Format and Open Container Format specifications. The current major version, EPUB 3, supports reflowable and fixed-layout content, embedded multimedia, JavaScript interactivity, MathML equations, and rich accessibility features including semantic markup and media overlays for synchronized text and audio. A defining advantage is universal device support — unlike proprietary formats, EPUB works natively on virtually every non-Kindle e-reader, tablet, and reading application, from Apple Books and Google Play Books to Kobo and dozens of third-party apps. The reflowable text model is another core strength, automatically adapting pagination, font size, and margins to match any screen dimension and user preference. EPUB's open specification and active W3C stewardship ensure long-term preservation and vendor independence, making it the de facto standard for digital publishing across libraries, academic institutions, and commercial retailers worldwide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert HDR to EPUB?

HDR environment maps store lighting data — converting to EPUB creates viewable images for portfolios or documentation.

What programs open EPUB files?

Apple Books, Calibre, Kobo, Google Play Books, Adobe Digital Editions, and most e-readers except Kindle

Does HDR to EPUB conversion preserve quality?

The converter optimizes for best visual fidelity. EPUB may apply compression

How many HDR files can I convert at once?

You can upload multiple HDR files in one session. Each converts to EPUB separately, and all results are downloadable upon completion.

Is tonemapping applied during conversion?

When converting Radiance HDR luminance data to a displayable format like EPUB, tonemapping maps the full range into visible output.

How fast is HDR to EPUB conversion?

Most conversions complete within seconds. Larger or more complex files may take slightly longer, but processing happens on fast cloud servers.
