Macro-Enabled Templates

DOTM files support VBA macros — converting DXF drawings into them enables automated engineering document generation in Word.

Process Multiple Drawings

Upload several DXF files and convert them all to DOTM templates at once. Each drawing is processed independently in parallel.

Automatic File Deletion

Every uploaded DXF file is erased after conversion completes. DOTM output stays available for download, then is deleted in 24 hours.

About formats

DXF (Drawing Exchange Format) is a CAD data file format developed by Autodesk, first released in December 1982 with AutoCAD 1.0 to enable interoperability between AutoCAD and other programs. The format exists in two variants: ASCII DXF, a human-readable text file organized into sections (HEADER, TABLES, BLOCKS, ENTITIES, OBJECTS), and binary DXF for faster parsing. Each geometric entity — lines, arcs, circles, polylines, splines, text, dimensions, and 3D solids — is described by group codes paired with values specifying coordinates and properties. DXF versions evolve alongside AutoCAD releases, adding support for new features with each edition. One major advantage is universal CAD compatibility — DXF is supported by virtually every CAD, CAM, and engineering application across all platforms, making it the most widely accepted exchange format for technical drawings. The ASCII variant provides another strength: drawings can be inspected, debugged, and generated programmatically using text processing tools or scripts. DXF serves as a critical bridge enabling architects, engineers, and manufacturers to share precise technical drawings regardless of which software each party uses, and remains the standard for cross-platform CAD data exchange.

DOTM is a macro-enabled template format for Microsoft Word, introduced with Office 2007 as part of the Office Open XML family. DOTM combines the template functionality of DOTX — providing reusable styles, page layouts, boilerplate content, and formatting definitions — with the ability to embed VBA macro code that executes in documents created from the template. The format is a ZIP archive containing XML parts for styles, document defaults, and theme definitions, plus a vbaProject.bin stream for the VBA project. This combination enables organizations to distribute not just visual consistency but also functional automation: every document created from a DOTM template inherits both the formatting framework and programmatic capabilities. Common use cases include templates that auto-populate document fields from corporate directories, enforce naming conventions, generate tables of contents, insert dynamic headers with project metadata, or validate document structure before submission. One advantage is embedded workflow automation — a DOTM template can include initialization macros that configure the document environment, register custom ribbon commands, and connect to data sources the moment a new document is created from it. The distinct .dotm extension allows administrators to apply differentiated trust policies for macro-containing templates versus standard DOTX files. DOTM is supported exclusively in Microsoft Word desktop editions where VBA execution is available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert DXF to DOTM?

DOTM templates support macros — ideal for firms that automate document generation with embedded DXF-based visuals and scripted layouts.

What is the difference between DOTM and DOTX?

DOTM supports VBA macros for automation while DOTX does not. Both serve as Word templates for creating new documents.

What software opens DOTM files?

Microsoft Word is the main application. LibreOffice Writer can also open DOTM templates, though macro execution may be limited.

Is the DXF to DOTM converter secure?

Yes. Source DXF files are deleted after conversion. All DOTM results are wiped from servers automatically within 24 hours.

Do I need to pay for this conversion?

Not for standard use. The DXF to DOTM converter is free. Premium accounts unlock higher limits and priority conversion queues.
