About formats

DXF (Drawing Exchange Format) is a CAD data file format developed by Autodesk, first released in December 1982 with AutoCAD 1.0 to enable interoperability between AutoCAD and other programs. The format exists in two variants: ASCII DXF, a human-readable text file organized into sections (HEADER, TABLES, BLOCKS, ENTITIES, OBJECTS), and binary DXF for faster parsing. Each geometric entity — lines, arcs, circles, polylines, splines, text, dimensions, and 3D solids — is described by group codes paired with values specifying coordinates and properties. DXF versions evolve alongside AutoCAD releases, adding support for new features with each edition. One major advantage is universal CAD compatibility — DXF is supported by virtually every CAD, CAM, and engineering application across all platforms, making it the most widely accepted exchange format for technical drawings. The ASCII variant provides another strength: drawings can be inspected, debugged, and generated programmatically using text processing tools or scripts. DXF serves as a critical bridge enabling architects, engineers, and manufacturers to share precise technical drawings regardless of which software each party uses, and remains the standard for cross-platform CAD data exchange.

PCT (also known as PICT) is a metafile graphics format originally developed by Apple Computer and introduced alongside the original Macintosh in January 1984. PCT files can contain both vector drawing commands and raster bitmap data, encoded as a sequence of QuickDraw drawing operations — the same graphics primitives used by the Macintosh operating system for all on-screen rendering. The format evolved through two major versions: PICT 1, which recorded basic QuickDraw operations (lines, rectangles, ovals, text, 1-bit bitmaps) in a compact format suitable for the original Macintosh's limited memory, and PICT 2, introduced with Color QuickDraw in 1987, which extended the format to support 24-bit color, multiple color spaces, and embedded JPEG-compressed data. PCT files begin with a 512-byte header (originally used for resource fork information), followed by the picture size, bounding rectangle, and a sequence of opcodes that define the drawing operations. During the Macintosh's commercial ascendancy, PICT was the universal graphics interchange format on Mac OS — the system clipboard used PICT for all graphical copy/paste operations, and most Mac applications could import and export the format. One advantage is the hybrid vector/raster nature: PCT files from the QuickDraw era preserve both scalable drawing commands and pixel data in a single format, enabling resolution-independent output for the vector portions. PICT's historical significance as the native Mac graphics format throughout the classic Mac OS era (1984-2001) provides another dimension. PCT files remain readable by Preview) on macOS, ImageMagick, XnView, LibreOffice, and GIMP.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert DXF to PCT?

PCT is the classic Macintosh PICT format. Converting DXF to PCT enables compatibility with legacy Mac publishing tools and archival document systems.

How do I open a PCT file?

Preview on macOS opens PCT natively. On other platforms, IrfanView, XnView, and GraphicConverter handle PCT files without issues.

Do I need to register to convert DXF to PCT?

No account is required. You can convert DXF to PCT directly without signing up — just upload, convert, and download.

Can I convert DXF to PCT for free?

Yes — basic DXF to PCT conversion is free on Convertio. Paid plans unlock higher file sizes, batch processing, and faster queue priority.

Does the tool require any installation?

Not at all. Everything runs in your browser — no software downloads, no plugins, no system requirements beyond a modern web browser.

How is my data handled?

Security is built in. DXF uploads are deleted after conversion, and PCT output files are removed from servers within 24 hours.
