Transparency Preserved

RGBA stores full alpha channel data. CMX to RGBA conversion captures transparency from your Corel designs alongside RGB color.

Server-Side Engine

All processing runs on Convertio servers. Complex CMX files with transparent layers are handled smoothly in the cloud.

No Installation

Convert CMX to RGBA directly in your browser. No SGI workstation, no Corel software — just Convertio.

About formats

CMX (Corel Presentation Exchange) is a vector graphics exchange format developed by Corel Corporation, introduced with CorelDRAW 5 in September 1994. Designed as a cross-application interchange format within the Corel product suite, CMX stores vector objects, text, bitmaps, and rendering attributes in a structure accessible to CorelDRAW, Corel PHOTO-PAINT, Corel Presentations, and other Corel applications without requiring each program to understand the full CDR native format. The format uses a chunk-based architecture that encodes geometric primitives, fill patterns, outline properties, and color definitions in a standardized way, supporting both 16-bit and 32-bit variants. CMX gained significance beyond the Corel ecosystem through its adoption by third-party applications and its role in clipart distribution — many vector art collections from the mid-to-late 1990s shipped in CMX format. One advantage is interoperability within design workflows: CMX provided a practical bridge for moving vector content between different Corel applications while preserving visual fidelity, gradients, and transparency attributes. The format's inclusion of both vector and bitmap data within a single file is another strength, allowing complex mixed-media illustrations to be exchanged as self-contained units. Microsoft also added CMX import support to some Office applications, expanding the format's reach. While modern Corel applications primarily use CDR for native work and export to SVG, PDF, or EPS for interchange, CMX files from the CorelDRAW era remain widely encountered in legacy asset libraries.

RGBA is a raw (headerless) image format that extends the RGB color model with a fourth channel for alpha transparency. Each pixel is stored as four consecutive sample values — red, green, blue, and alpha — written sequentially in scanline order with no container structure, headers, or compression. The alpha channel specifies opacity for each pixel independently: a maximum value means fully opaque, zero means fully transparent, and intermediate values produce semi-transparency. Like its three-channel counterpart, RGBA files require the image dimensions and bit depth to be specified externally since the raw data stream contains no metadata. The format supports 8-bit (four bytes per pixel, 32-bit total), 16-bit, and floating-point channel depths. In compositing workflows, the alpha channel enables layering operations where foreground elements are blended over backgrounds according to their per-pixel opacity — the mathematical foundation for all modern image compositing, described by Porter and Duff in their seminal 1984 paper on digital compositing. One advantage is direct framebuffer compatibility: modern GPU hardware natively processes 32-bit RGBA pixels, so raw RGBA data can be uploaded to texture memory or written from render targets without any format conversion, critical for real-time graphics applications and game engines. The format's simplicity in representing transparent images provides another practical benefit — scientific visualization, medical imaging, and overlay rendering can produce raw RGBA output that any downstream tool can consume without needing a common container format. RGBA files are handled by ImageMagick, FFmpeg, and various graphics and compositing tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert CMX to RGBA?

RGBA adds an alpha transparency channel to the SGI image format. Converting CMX to RGBA preserves transparency data from your Corel designs.

What opens RGBA files?

GIMP, IrfanView, XnView, and 3D rendering tools that support SGI formats read RGBA images with their transparency data.

How is RGBA different from RGB?

RGBA includes a fourth alpha channel for transparency. RGB only stores red, green, and blue color data without transparency.

Is the converter free?

Yes — Convertio offers free CMX to RGBA conversion. Premium plans are available for heavier workflows.

How fast is CMX to RGBA?

Conversion finishes in seconds. Convertio cloud servers handle the processing while your device stays idle.
