About formats

AZW3, also known as Kindle Format 8 (KF8), is Amazon's advanced ebook format introduced in November 2011 alongside the first Kindle Fire tablet. It replaced the older MOBI-based AZW format with a substantially more capable layout engine built on HTML5 and CSS3 subsets, enabling fixed layouts, embedded fonts, SVG graphics, drop caps, and other typographic refinements that were impossible in earlier Kindle formats. Internally, an AZW3 file packages content in a structure derived from EPUB, wrapped in Amazon's proprietary Palm database container with optional DRM protection. The format supports both reflowable text for novels and fixed-layout pages for comics, cookbooks, and children's titles. One major advantage is rich formatting fidelity — publishers can produce visually sophisticated ebooks with complex page designs, nested tables, and precise font control that render consistently across the Kindle ecosystem. Another strength is backward compatibility: AZW3 files can bundle a MOBI fallback section so older Kindle hardware still displays the content, even without full KF8 rendering. The format integrates tightly with Amazon's Kindle platform, supporting features like X-Ray, Whispersync page tracking, and in-book dictionary lookups across millions of devices and apps worldwide.

SIX is a file extension for SIXEL (Six Pixel) graphics data, a bitmap graphics format developed by Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) in 1983 and introduced with the LA50 dot matrix printer. SIXEL encodes images as a sequence of printable ASCII characters, where each character represents a column of six vertical pixels (a 'sixel') — the character's ASCII value minus 63 provides a 6-bit binary pattern, with each bit controlling one pixel in the vertical column. The encoding is structured as a series of sixel bands (each six pixels tall) across the image width, with control sequences for color selection (up to 256 registers with HLS or RGB specification), repeat counts (run-length encoding for efficiency), carriage return, and newline commands. SIXEL data is transmitted to the output device using DEC's standard escape sequence protocol, embedded within the text stream alongside regular character output. Originally designed for DEC's line of printers and later supported by DEC VT-series terminals (VT240, VT330, VT340), SIXEL has experienced a remarkable revival in modern terminal emulator software. One advantage is terminal-native image display: SIXEL allows images to be rendered directly within a text terminal session without requiring a graphical window system, enabling command-line tools to display graphs, photographs, and previews inline with text output. This capability has driven adoption in modern terminals like mlterm, xterm, WezTerm, and foot. SIX/SIXEL data can be generated by ImageMagick, libsixel, and chafa, and viewed in any SIXEL-capable terminal emulator.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert AZW3 to SIX?

SIXEL graphics render directly in terminal emulators — converting AZW3 lets you view Kindle page images in text-based environments.

What displays SIX files?

xterm (with SIXEL support), mlterm, mintty, libsixel tools, and DEC VT-series terminals can render SIXEL graphics natively.

Does SIXEL support color?

Yes — SIXEL supports palettized color images, so AZW3 pages can render with reasonable color fidelity in supporting terminals.

Are SIX files large?

SIXEL output is text-encoded, so files can be larger than binary formats — but they are specifically optimized for terminal display.

Is this conversion free?

Yes — Convertio provides AZW3 to SIX conversion at no cost. Paid plans unlock higher limits for power users.
