Archival-Quality Images

AZW3 pages render as JP2 JPEG 2000 images with wavelet compression — sharper than JPG at the same file size.

Processed in the Cloud

Image rendering runs on high-performance servers, delivering JP2 output quickly without consuming your device resources.

Privacy First

Uploaded AZW3 files are erased immediately after conversion. JP2 outputs are automatically removed within 24 hours.

About formats

AZW3, also known as Kindle Format 8 (KF8), is Amazon's advanced ebook format introduced in November 2011 alongside the first Kindle Fire tablet. It replaced the older MOBI-based AZW format with a substantially more capable layout engine built on HTML5 and CSS3 subsets, enabling fixed layouts, embedded fonts, SVG graphics, drop caps, and other typographic refinements that were impossible in earlier Kindle formats. Internally, an AZW3 file packages content in a structure derived from EPUB, wrapped in Amazon's proprietary Palm database container with optional DRM protection. The format supports both reflowable text for novels and fixed-layout pages for comics, cookbooks, and children's titles. One major advantage is rich formatting fidelity — publishers can produce visually sophisticated ebooks with complex page designs, nested tables, and precise font control that render consistently across the Kindle ecosystem. Another strength is backward compatibility: AZW3 files can bundle a MOBI fallback section so older Kindle hardware still displays the content, even without full KF8 rendering. The format integrates tightly with Amazon's Kindle platform, supporting features like X-Ray, Whispersync page tracking, and in-book dictionary lookups across millions of devices and apps worldwide.

JP2 (JPEG 2000 Part 1) is an image format based on the JPEG 2000 compression standard, developed by the Joint Photographic Experts Group and published as ISO/IEC 15444-1 in December 2000 as the successor to the original JPEG standard. Unlike JPEG's block-based discrete cosine transform, JPEG 2000 uses discrete wavelet transform (DWT) compression, which eliminates the characteristic 8x8 block artifacts visible in highly compressed JPEG images and instead produces a smooth, gradual quality degradation. The format supports both lossy and lossless compression within the same codestream, along with features absent from original JPEG: 16-bit and higher bit-depth images, arbitrary numbers of color channels, alpha transparency, region-of-interest coding (allocating more bits to important areas), and progressive quality or resolution refinement from a single compressed stream. One advantage is superior image quality at low bit rates — JPEG 2000 produces visibly cleaner images than JPEG at equivalent file sizes, particularly below 0.5 bits per pixel where JPEG exhibits severe blocking. The progressive decoding capability is another strength: a single JP2 file can be decoded at any resolution or quality level without encoding multiple versions, valuable for remote sensing and medical imaging where the same image must serve both thumbnail browsing and full-resolution analysis. JP2 is the mandated format for digital cinema (DCI), the preferred format in geospatial data (GeoJP2), and widely adopted in cultural heritage digitization.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert AZW3 to JP2?

JP2 offers superior image quality with wavelet compression — ideal for archival-grade page captures from Kindle ebooks.

What opens JP2 files?

IrfanView, XnView, GIMP, Photoshop, FastStone Image Viewer, and macOS Preview can open JPEG 2000 images. Some browsers support it too.

How does JP2 compare to regular JPG?

JP2 provides better quality at similar file sizes thanks to wavelet compression. It also supports lossless mode and transparency.

Is AZW3 to JP2 conversion fast?

Yes — most ebooks produce JP2 images within seconds. All rendering happens on remote servers without burdening your local hardware.

Any cost for this conversion?

None. Convertio offers AZW3 to JP2 for free. Paid subscriptions add batch processing and extended file size support.
