About formats

SXW is the word processing document format used by StarOffice 6.0 and OpenOffice.org 1.0, developed by Sun Microsystems and released in 2002. The format was one of the first mainstream office document formats to adopt an XML-based architecture, packaging document content, styles, metadata, and embedded media in a ZIP archive — a structural approach that directly influenced the later OpenDocument Format (ODF). The content.xml file describes the document body using XML elements for paragraphs, headings, lists, tables, footnotes, and inline formatting, while styles.xml defines the styling rules and meta.xml carries document properties. SXW represented a significant milestone in open-source office software, demonstrating that a non-proprietary XML format could handle the full range of word processing features including change tracking, indexes, cross-references, and complex page layouts. One advantage was transparency and openness — the XML structure made document content inspectable, transformable, and processable using standard tools, a sharp contrast to the opaque binary formats dominant at the time. The format's role as a technological precursor to the ODF standard is another historical significance: the OASIS OpenDocument Technical Committee used the OpenOffice.org XML format (including SXW) as the starting point for developing ODF 1.0. While SXW was superseded by ODT with OpenOffice.org 2.0 in 2005, existing SXW documents can be opened by LibreOffice, Apache OpenOffice, and document conversion tools.

DjVu (pronounced "deja vu") is a document format developed at AT&T Labs by Yann LeCun, Leon Bottou, Patrick Haffner, and Paul Howard, first released in 1996. The format was specifically designed for storing scanned documents and images at very high compression ratios while maintaining visual quality suitable for on-screen reading. DjVu achieves this through a layered approach: the document image is separated into a foreground layer (text and line art at full resolution), a background layer (photographs and textures at reduced resolution), and a mask layer that determines which layer is visible at each pixel. This separation, combined with purpose-built compression algorithms for each layer type, typically produces files 5-10 times smaller than equivalent JPEG or PDF scans. One advantage is exceptional compression on scanned pages — a 300 DPI color scan that might occupy 25 MB as TIFF or 500 KB as JPEG typically compresses to 40-80 KB in DjVu while preserving legible text. The progressive rendering model is another strength: DjVu files stream efficiently over networks, displaying a readable low-resolution version almost immediately while progressively refining to full quality. The format supports multi-page documents, embedded text layers for searchability, hyperlinks, annotations, and a shared dictionary mechanism that further compresses collections of similar pages. DjVu is widely used by libraries and archives for digitized historical documents and manuscripts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert SXW to DJVU?

DJVU offers excellent compression for scanned documents and text — ideal for archiving bulky legacy StarOffice files compactly.

What software reads DJVU files?

WinDjView, Sumatra PDF, Evince, DjVuLibre, and Okular are popular DJVU viewers available on Windows, Mac, and Linux.

Is the DJVU output searchable?

DJVU can contain a text layer, but results depend on the source content. Pure text SXW files typically produce readable output.

Can I convert many SXW files to DJVU?

Yes — upload multiple SXW documents and batch-convert them to DJVU in one session using the Convertio converter.

Is there a charge for this conversion?

Basic SXW to DJVU conversion is free. Premium plans are available for users who need higher throughput or larger files.

Does DJVU preserve document layout?

DJVU captures the visual layout of your SXW document, including text positioning, images, and overall page structure.
