About formats

SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) is an XML-based vector image format developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), with the 1.0 specification published as a Recommendation on September 4, 2001. Unlike binary vector formats, SVG describes shapes, paths, text, gradients, filters, and animations in human-readable XML markup that can be authored in a text editor, processed by scripting languages, and styled with CSS. The format supports both vector elements (lines, curves, polygons defined by mathematical coordinates) and embedded raster images, along with interactivity through JavaScript event handling and declarative animations via SMIL or CSS transitions. SVG is natively rendered by all modern web browsers without plugins, making it the standard format for resolution-independent graphics on the web — from icons and logos to interactive data visualizations and animated illustrations. A major advantage is infinite scalability: SVG graphics remain perfectly sharp on any display, from low-DPI monitors to ultra-high-resolution Retina screens, because rendering is computed from geometry rather than pixels. The text-based nature provides another core strength — SVG content is indexable by search engines, accessible to screen readers, and trivially manipulable via the DOM using standard web technologies. The active W3C specification continues to evolve with modern web platform capabilities, maintaining SVG's position as the essential vector format for responsive web design.

GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) was introduced by CompuServe on June 15, 1987 as a platform-independent image format for transmitting color graphics over the CompuServe online service's modem-speed connections. The format uses LZW (Lempel-Ziv-Welch) lossless compression on indexed-color images with a palette of up to 256 colors selected from a 24-bit RGB color space. GIF's most distinctive capability is animation: multiple image frames can be stored sequentially within a single file, each with independent delay timing, disposal methods, and local color palettes, enabling short looping animations without any video codec or player. The format also supports binary transparency (one palette entry designated as fully transparent) and interlaced display for progressive rendering. GIF became synonymous with web culture — animated GIFs proliferated across early websites, messaging platforms, and social media, evolving into a communication medium in their own right. One advantage is universal animation support — GIF animations play natively in every web browser, email client, messaging app, and social platform without plugins, codecs, or compatibility concerns, a level of ubiquity no other animation format has achieved. The lossless compression on palette-based images provides another strength: graphics with flat colors, text, and sharp edges (logos, diagrams, UI elements) compress efficiently without the artifacts that affect JPEG. Although the LZW patents that once threatened GIF's use expired in 2004, and newer formats like WebP and AVIF offer superior compression with full-color animation, GIF's cultural entrenchment keeps it irreplaceable for casual animated content.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert SVG to GIF?

GIF is universally supported in emails, forums, and legacy web contexts where SVG may not render — it also supports basic transparency and simple animation.

What applications display GIF?

Every web browser, email client, social media platform, and messaging app supports GIF images — it is one of the most portable image formats available.

Does GIF keep transparency?

GIF supports binary transparency (fully transparent or fully opaque) — semi-transparent SVG elements may show slight edge artifacts after conversion.

Is GIF limited to 256 colors?

Yes — GIF uses an indexed palette of up to 256 colors. Complex gradients from SVG may show visible banding in the GIF output.

Can I convert SVG to animated GIF?

This converter produces static GIF frames from SVG. For animated GIF creation, you would need a dedicated animation tool.
