About formats

SK is the native file format of Skencil (originally named Sketch), a free vector graphics editor for Linux created by Bernhard Herzog, with the first public release on October 31, 1998. Skencil holds historical significance as one of the earliest full-featured vector drawing applications written almost entirely in Python, with only performance-critical rendering components implemented in C. The SK file format uses a text-based, Python-like syntax to describe document structure — pages, layers, groups, and individual graphic objects are represented as nested statements with parameters specifying coordinates, colors, line styles, and transformations. The format supports Bezier curves, rectangles, ellipses, text objects with font specifications, imported raster images, gradient and pattern fills, and hierarchical grouping with affine transforms. One advantage is human readability — SK files can be opened in any text editor, making it possible to inspect, modify, or generate artwork programmatically using simple scripts. The Python-native structure also provides a benefit for automation: since Skencil itself is a Python application, the file format integrates naturally with scripting workflows for batch processing and procedural graphic generation. While Skencil's development slowed after the mid-2000s, its SK format became the foundation for the sK1) project, which extended the format and continued active open-source vector graphics development. SK files remain convertible through sK1, UniConvertor, and other open-source tools.

AI (Adobe Illustrator Artwork) is the native file format of Adobe Illustrator, the industry-standard vector graphics editor first released in January 1987 for the Apple Macintosh. Early versions of the format were based on the PostScript page description language, with each file being a conforming EPS document that could be placed in other layouts and interpreted by PostScript printers. Starting with Illustrator 9 in 2000, Adobe transitioned the AI format to a PDF-based structure, embedding Illustrator-specific editing data within a valid PDF wrapper — this dual nature means modern AI files can be opened in any PDF viewer for display, while preserving the full editable artwork including layers, artboards, and live effects when reopened in Illustrator. The format supports complex vector constructs like gradient meshes, clipping masks, symbol libraries, transparency blending modes, and multiple artboards within a single document. One significant advantage is lossless scalability — artwork maintains perfect precision at any size, from favicon to billboard, because geometry is defined mathematically rather than as pixels. Deep integration with the Adobe Creative Cloud ecosystem is another strength, enabling seamless round-tripping between Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, and After Effects without format conversion. AI remains the de facto standard for professional illustration, logo design, and print production workflows worldwide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert SK to AI?

The Skencil editor is discontinued and SK has no modern support. AI format lets you continue editing your vector work in Adobe Illustrator.

What software opens AI files?

Adobe Illustrator is the primary editor. CorelDRAW, Inkscape, and Affinity Designer can also import AI files for viewing or editing.

Does the conversion maintain vector quality?

Both SK and AI are vector formats. Paths and shapes from your Skencil drawing are preserved in the resulting AI file.

Is this converter free to use?

Convertio provides SK to AI conversion at no charge. Premium tiers offer increased file sizes and faster processing speeds.

Will my SK layer structure transfer?

Complex Skencil layer hierarchies may be simplified during conversion. Basic vector structure and object grouping are retained.

How secure is the conversion?

Files are encrypted in transit. Source SK uploads and resulting AI files are automatically deleted from servers after processing.
