About formats

PEF (Pentax Electronic Format) is the proprietary RAW image format used by Pentax digital SLR and mirrorless cameras, introduced in 2003 with the *ist D — Pentax's first digital SLR — and continuing through the current K-mount and medium-format 645 lineup. PEF files capture the unprocessed 12-bit or 14-bit readout from the camera's CMOS sensor in its native Bayer mosaic pattern, stored in a TIFF-based container with Huffman-coded lossless compression. The format includes embedded JPEG previews at multiple sizes, comprehensive EXIF metadata, and Pentax-specific MakerNote tags that record Custom Image mode settings, Shake Reduction (SR) gyroscope data, lens identification from the K-mount electronic interface, and the camera's Auto Level correction parameters. Pentax cameras are notable for their weather-sealed construction and compatibility with the vast legacy of K-mount lenses dating back to 1975, and PEF files from these bodies can include manual lens metadata entered through the camera's menu system. One advantage is the preservation of Pentax's distinctive color rendering — the brand's Custom Image modes (Bright, Natural, Reversal Film, Bleach Bypass, etc.) are stored as metadata rather than applied to the raw data, allowing photographers to explore different rendering interpretations during post-processing while the original sensor capture remains untouched. The format's longevity is another strength: PEF files from every Pentax DSLR are supported by Adobe Lightroom, Capture One, dcraw, RawTherapee, Pentax's own Digital Camera Utility, and other modern RAW processors.

JPS (JPEG Stereo) is a stereoscopic 3D image format that stores a left-eye and right-eye view pair within a single JPEG-compressed file, developed by VRex, Inc. around 1997 for use with stereoscopic displays and viewers. A JPS file is technically a standard JPEG file containing a side-by-side stereo pair — the left and right perspective images are placed horizontally adjacent within a single frame, with the full image width being twice the individual view width. The file uses standard JPEG compression and can be opened by any JPEG-compatible viewer (which will show the side-by-side pair as a single wide image), but stereo-aware applications parse the image into its left and right components for proper 3D presentation. JPS files can be viewed with dedicated stereoscopic software, anaglyph viewers (generating red-cyan images for colored glasses), autostereoscopic displays, VR headsets, and hardware like NVIDIA 3D Vision or passive 3D monitors. The format gained renewed interest with the consumer 3D photography boom of the late 2000s and early 2010s, when cameras like the Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D W1/W3 captured stereo pairs natively. One advantage is backward compatibility: because JPS uses standard JPEG encoding, the files work with existing JPEG infrastructure — they can be transmitted, stored, thumbnailed, and even viewed (as flat side-by-side images) without any special software. The format's simplicity is another practical strength — no specialized container or codec is required, and any tool that can crop and display JPEG images can extract individual views. JPS files are supported by StereoPhoto Maker, ImageMagick, and various 3D photo viewers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert PEF to JPS?

PEF is Pentax's proprietary RAW format with limited viewer support — converting to JPS ensures your Pentax photos remain accessible long-term.

What programs open JPS files?

Open JPS files using StereoPhoto Maker, IrfanView, 3D image viewers, and VR applications.

Does converting PEF to JPS affect quality?

The conversion preserves visual quality as closely as the target format allows. JPS output maintains the essential detail from your original PEF image.

Is my PEF file safe during conversion?

Your files are handled securely. The PEF upload is erased right after processing, and the resulting JPS is purged from servers within 24 hours.

Can I convert multiple PEF files to JPS at once?

Absolutely — Convertio lets you upload multiple PEF files simultaneously. Each is converted to JPS and available for individual download.

Do I need to install software?

No software needed. The conversion engine runs server-side — you just upload your PEF through the browser and get the JPS back.
