Format Upgrade

PAF recordings become far more usable as CVSD. The conversion unlocks low bitrate speech compression that PAF cannot provide.

Secure Processing

All uploaded files are handled securely — PAF inputs are removed after processing, and CVSD outputs expire within 24 hours.

Bulk Conversion

Handle multiple PAF to CVSD conversions at once. Upload your batch and let the converter process them in parallel.

About formats

PAF (Paris Audio File) is the native audio format of the Ensoniq PARIS (Professional Audio Recording Integrated System) digital audio workstation, developed by Ensoniq in the late 1990s. PARIS was a hardware/software DAW that earned a loyal following among recording engineers for its warm analog-like sound and reliable operation, with PAF serving as its primary working file container. The format stores uncompressed PCM audio at 16-bit or 24-bit resolution and standard professional sample rates (44.1, 48, and 96 kHz), preserving full fidelity without lossy compression. PAF uses a straightforward binary layout — a compact header followed by interleaved sample data — enabling efficient real-time read and write during recording sessions. One notable advantage is support for both big-endian and little-endian byte ordering, reflecting the PARIS system's cross-platform roots on Mac and PC. After Ensoniq's acquisition by E-mu Systems and then Creative Technology, the PARIS DAW was discontinued, but PAF files remain important for studios with archived projects in this format. Tools like SoX and libsndfile can read and convert PAF files, ensuring long-term accessibility.

CVSD (Continuously Variable Slope Delta modulation) is a voice digitization method standardized for military and telephony use by NATO and the CCITT during the 1970s. It encodes differences between consecutive samples as a single bit — 1 if the current sample exceeds the prediction, 0 otherwise — while a syllabic companding filter adjusts step size by monitoring runs of identical bits. Operating at 16 to 64 kbps, CVSD balances voice intelligibility against bandwidth, making it the encoding of choice for secure military links and tactical radio systems. The bitstream can be decoded with straightforward hardware, originally built into dedicated integrated circuits. One advantage is implementation simplicity — encoders and decoders need minimal resources, enabling real-time processing on low-power embedded hardware. Robustness under noisy conditions is another strength, as single-bit errors affect only local samples rather than corrupting entire frames. SoX provides software encoding and decoding support, letting modern systems work with legacy CVSD recordings from military archives and vintage telecommunications infrastructure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I switch from PAF to CVSD?

PAF suffers from legacy production format from the Ensoniq PARIS era. CVSD offers delta modulation standard.

Which software opens CVSD recordings?

You can open CVSD with SoX and specialized telephony software.

Is there quality loss from PAF to CVSD?

The source PAF audio has inherently low fidelity. CVSD conversion preserves what is there while adding broad compatibility.

Is PAF to CVSD conversion available on all platforms?

It works on any platform — desktop or mobile. Just open your browser, upload the PAF recording, and convert to CVSD.

Is my PAF audio kept private during conversion?

Your uploaded PAF recordings are deleted immediately after conversion. The resulting CVSD outputs are removed within 24 hours.

Do I need to install anything for PAF to CVSD?

No installation required. The converter runs entirely in your web browser — just upload, convert, and download.
