About formats

OXPS (Open XPS) is a fixed-layout document format standardized as ECMA-388 in June 2009, representing an evolution of Microsoft's original XPS specification. The format packages fixed-layout pages, fonts, images, and metadata in a ZIP-based Open Packaging Conventions container — the same packaging framework used by DOCX, XLSX, and other Office Open XML formats. Each page is described using an XML markup language that specifies paths, glyphs, images, and canvas elements with precise coordinates, producing documents that render identically regardless of the viewing device or printer. OXPS incorporated several changes from the original XPS: the use of JPEG XR for high dynamic range images, support for the Open Packaging Conventions 2nd edition, and alignment with the Ecma standardization process. Windows 8 and later generate OXPS (rather than XPS) when printing to the Microsoft XPS Document Writer. One advantage is standards-based document fidelity — as an Ecma standard, OXPS provides a vendor-neutral, fully specified format for documents that must look identical everywhere they are rendered, essential for legal filings, regulatory submissions, and archival records. The fixed-layout model is another strength: unlike reflowable formats, OXPS documents preserve exact page composition including precise glyph positioning and vector graphics. Built-in support in Windows and the .NET framework provides native viewing and creation capabilities without third-party software.

VIPS is the native file format of the libvips) image processing library, originally developed by John Cupitt and Kirk Martinez at the National Gallery in London during the VASARI project (1989-1993) for high-resolution digitization and analysis of paintings. The VIPS format stores large images in a simple, memory-mappable layout: a header containing image dimensions, number of bands (channels), data type (8/16/32-bit integer, float, double, complex), color interpretation, resolution, and offset metadata, followed by the raw pixel data in band-interleaved format. This straightforward layout allows the operating system's virtual memory manager to map the file directly into address space, enabling libvips to process images much larger than available RAM by paging portions in and out as needed — a technique called demand-driven evaluation. VIPS files support images with any number of bands at any of the supported numeric types, accommodating everything from standard RGB photographs to hyperspectral datasets with hundreds of bands. One advantage is large-image performance: libvips's architecture processes images in small tiles evaluated on demand, meaning a 100,000 x 100,000 pixel image can be cropped, resized, sharpened, and saved without loading the entire image into memory — a capability that makes VIPS the engine behind image processing services handling millions of web images. The format's scientific heritage is another strength — the VASARI project required analyzing paintings at ultra-high resolution with multispectral imaging, and the VIPS format's support for arbitrary band counts and floating-point precision reflects these computational imaging origins. VIPS files are primarily used with the libvips library (available for C, Python, Ruby, and other languages) and can be converted to other formats via vips command-line tools or ImageMagick.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert OXPS to VIPS?

VIPS is the native format for libvips — converting OXPS pages to VIPS enables fast, memory-efficient image processing at scale.

What tools work with VIPS files?

The libvips library and its CLI tools (vips, nip2) read VIPS natively. Applications built on libvips also support it.

Is VIPS a mainstream image format?

No — VIPS is a specialized format optimized for the libvips processing library. It excels at handling very large images.

Are multi-page OXPS documents supported?

Yes — every page in the OXPS document is rendered as a separate VIPS image file.

Is there a cost for this conversion?

None — OXPS to VIPS conversion is free. Premium plans exist for users who need higher throughput or batch capacity.

What makes libvips special?

libvips processes images with minimal memory usage and high speed — its native VIPS format enables the fastest possible I/O.
