MXF (Material Exchange Format) is a professional media container standardized by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) in 2004 under the SMPTE 377M specification. This metadata travels with the content through the production chain, reducing the risk of information loss when files move between ingest, editing, graphics, playout, and archive systems. MXF files use an operational pattern system that defines different levels of complexity, from simple single-item packages (OP1a) to complex multi-item playlists.
