About formats

JPE is an alternate file extension for JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) compressed images, functionally identical to .jpg and .jpeg files. The .jpe extension originated in early computing environments where three-character file extensions were the norm (as on MS-DOS and Windows 3.x), and some applications registered .jpe as an additional JPEG-associated extension alongside .jpg.
