About formats

HDR (also known as RGBE or Radiance HDR) is a high-dynamic-range image format created by Greg Ward Larson as part of the Radiance lighting simulation system, developed at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory starting in 1985 with the HDR format emerging around 1989. The format stores floating-point RGB pixel values using a compact 32-bit-per-pixel encoding called RGBE (Red, Green, Blue, Exponent): three 8-bit mantissa bytes share a single 8-bit exponent, representing luminance values across a range of roughly 76 orders of magnitude while keeping file sizes comparable to standard 24-bit images. HDR files begin with a text header containing rendering and exposure metadata, followed by the RGBE pixel data compressed with a scanline-oriented run-length encoding scheme. The format captures the full luminance range of real-world scenes — from deep shadows to direct sunlight — enabling physically accurate lighting calculations, tone mapping to different display conditions, and post-capture exposure adjustment without the clipping artifacts inherent in 8-bit formats. One advantage is the format's foundational role in HDR imaging: Radiance HDR pioneered the concept of storing real-world luminance values in image files, and the .hdr format became the standard for light probe images and environment maps used in image-based lighting across the 3D rendering industry. The format's compact encoding is another practical strength — the RGBE scheme provides far more dynamic range than 8-bit formats while using only 33% more storage per pixel, a favorable tradeoff that made HDR practical on storage-limited systems of the late 1980s. HDR files are supported by Photoshop, GIMP, ImageMagick, Blender, and all major 3D renderers.

AZW3, also known as Kindle Format 8 (KF8), is Amazon's advanced ebook format introduced in November 2011 alongside the first Kindle Fire tablet. It replaced the older MOBI-based AZW format with a substantially more capable layout engine built on HTML5 and CSS3 subsets, enabling fixed layouts, embedded fonts, SVG graphics, drop caps, and other typographic refinements that were impossible in earlier Kindle formats. Internally, an AZW3 file packages content in a structure derived from EPUB, wrapped in Amazon's proprietary Palm database container with optional DRM protection. The format supports both reflowable text for novels and fixed-layout pages for comics, cookbooks, and children's titles. One major advantage is rich formatting fidelity — publishers can produce visually sophisticated ebooks with complex page designs, nested tables, and precise font control that render consistently across the Kindle ecosystem. Another strength is backward compatibility: AZW3 files can bundle a MOBI fallback section so older Kindle hardware still displays the content, even without full KF8 rendering. The format integrates tightly with Amazon's Kindle platform, supporting features like X-Ray, Whispersync page tracking, and in-book dictionary lookups across millions of devices and apps worldwide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert HDR to AZW3?

Radiance HDR files are for 3D lighting, not general viewing. AZW3 conversion produces an accessible preview version.

What programs open AZW3 files?

Amazon Kindle devices and apps, Calibre e-book manager, and some third-party e-readers open AZW3

Does HDR to AZW3 conversion preserve quality?

The converter optimizes for best visual fidelity. AZW3 may apply compression

What platforms support the HDR to AZW3 converter?

Any device with a web browser — Windows, macOS, Linux, Chrome OS, iOS, and Android. No app installation is needed.

Is HDR to AZW3 conversion free on Convertio?

Standard HDR to AZW3 conversions are free. Premium plans add batch processing, larger uploads, and priority conversion speed for heavy workflows.

Are colors preserved in the HDR to AZW3 conversion?

HDR stores extended dynamic range data. Converting to AZW3 maps that range into the displayable gamut while retaining visual accuracy.
