About formats

EMF (Enhanced Metafile) is a vector graphics format developed by Microsoft as the successor to WMF (Windows Metafile), introduced with Windows NT 3.1 in July 1993. EMF records a sequence of GDI (Graphics Device Interface) function calls that describe vector shapes, text, embedded bitmaps, and rendering attributes in a device-independent manner. Unlike WMF's 16-bit coordinate system limited to 65,536 units, EMF uses 32-bit coordinates and adds support for Bezier curves, advanced path operations, world coordinate transforms, gradient fills, and extended text capabilities including Unicode. The format functions as a graphics recording mechanism — applications capture their drawing operations into an EMF file, which can then be replayed at any scale on any device with full geometric precision. One advantage is native Windows integration: EMF is the standard clipboard and spooler format for vector content across the Windows ecosystem, enabling lossless copy-paste of graphics between Office documents, design tools, and presentation software without rasterization. Resolution independence is another key strength — EMF graphics scale smoothly from screen display to high-resolution print output. An extended variant, EMF+, introduced with GDI+ adds anti-aliasing, alpha transparency, and advanced brush types. EMF remains deeply embedded in Windows-based publishing, technical documentation, and enterprise document workflows.

RAS (Sun Raster) is a raster image format developed by Sun Microsystems for their SunOS and Solaris Unix workstations, dating to approximately 1982. Sun Raster files store 2D bitmap images with support for 1-bit monochrome, 8-bit indexed color (with a color map), 24-bit true color (BGR byte order), and 32-bit XBGR (with an unused alpha byte). The format uses a 32-byte header containing a magic number (0x59a66a95), width, height, bit depth, data length, raster type (indicating compression), color map type, and color map length, followed by the optional color map data and the pixel data. RAS supports three encoding modes: standard (uncompressed, with each scanline padded to a 16-bit boundary), byte-encoded (run-length encoded using a simple escape-code scheme), and RGB (uncompressed with RGB rather than BGR byte order). Sun Raster was the native image format for Sun's window system and later the OpenWindows desktop environment, serving as the standard format for screenshots, icons, backgrounds, and application graphics on Sun workstations throughout the 1980s and 1990s. One advantage is the format's representation of Unix workstation computing heritage: Sun Raster files from the SunOS/Solaris era document the visual culture of an important computing platform that drove advances in networking, multiprocessing, and graphics workstation design. The format's straightforward structure is another practical strength — the 32-byte header and simple encoding make RAS files easy to parse and convert, even with custom code. RAS files are supported by ImageMagick, GIMP, XnView, and other image processing tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert EMF to RAS?

Windows Enhanced Metafiles lack broad compatibility. Converting to RAS lets you use the graphic on the web, on mobile, or in any editor.

What programs open RAS files?

You can open RAS files with XnView, IrfanView, GIMP, or Sun raster image viewers.

Is my data safe when converting EMF to RAS?

File security is built in. Source EMF files are purged after conversion, and RAS results are automatically cleared in 24 hours.

Does Convertio charge for EMF to RAS conversion?

Not at all — basic EMF to RAS conversion on Convertio is free. Premium subscriptions exist for heavy users.

How quickly does EMF to RAS conversion finish?

Most conversions complete within seconds. Larger files may take slightly longer, but cloud processing keeps it fast regardless of your device.

Can I convert multiple EMF files to RAS at once?

Batch conversion is supported. Upload several EMF files simultaneously and each one converts to RAS independently in a single session.
