About formats

DOTX is the Open XML template format for Microsoft Word, introduced with Office 2007. A DOTX file is a ZIP archive containing XML parts that define document styles, page layout defaults, theme colors, theme fonts, numbering formats, boilerplate content, headers, footers, and other elements that establish a reusable document foundation. When applied, a DOTX template creates a new DOCX document inheriting the template's complete formatting system. The XML-based structure provides advantages over the legacy DOT format: templates can be inspected and modified using standard XML tools, individual components (styles, themes) are cleanly separated into dedicated files, and ZIP compression yields smaller file sizes. One advantage is modular design management — DOTX templates encapsulate a complete formatting identity as a distributable package, and the XML architecture makes it straightforward to update specific elements like color schemes or font definitions without rebuilding the entire template. Broad compatibility is another strength: DOTX templates work in Word on Windows and macOS, LibreOffice Writer, and online platforms including Google Docs (with conversion). The format integrates with Word's template management system and organizational template libraries via SharePoint, enabling centralized document governance across large teams. DOTX has become the standard for distributing document formatting frameworks in corporate, academic, and publishing environments.

EXR is a high-dynamic-range raster image format developed by Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) internally since 1999 and publicly released as open-source software in January 2003. OpenEXR was created to meet the demanding requirements of feature film visual effects compositing, where scenes routinely contain extreme brightness ranges — from deep shadows to specular highlights on water, metal, or light sources — that exceed the precision of 8-bit or 16-bit integer formats. EXR stores pixel data in 16-bit floating-point (half) or 32-bit floating-point per channel, providing over 30 stops of dynamic range with smooth precision across the entire luminance spectrum. The format supports an arbitrary number of channels (not just RGBA), tiled and scanline storage, multiple compression methods (lossless ZIP, lossy B44 and DWAA/DWAB for preview quality), multi-part files containing multiple views or layers, and deep pixel data where each pixel stores multiple depth-sorted samples for volumetric effects. One advantage is compositing fidelity: the floating-point precision means that color grading, exposure adjustments, lighting changes, and multi-layer compositing operations produce mathematically correct results without the banding, clipping, or quantization artifacts inherent in integer formats. EXR's adoption as the VFX industry standard is another core strength — it is the default interchange format for Foundry Nuke, Autodesk Flame, Blackmagic Fusion, Adobe After Effects, and every major 3D renderer, and its open-source C++ library is embedded in hundreds of production tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert DOTX to EXR?

EXR is the industry standard for HDR imaging in VFX and film — converting renders your template pages for compositing workflows.

What opens EXR files?

Adobe Photoshop, Nuke, Blender, DaVinci Resolve, GIMP, and other VFX and compositing tools handle OpenEXR files natively.

Does EXR support HDR data?

Yes — EXR stores high dynamic range pixel data with floating-point precision, offering far more color depth than standard formats.

Can I batch convert DOTX to EXR?

Yes — upload several DOTX files and render all pages as EXR images simultaneously in a single Convertio session.

Is this free?

Basic conversions are free on Convertio. Premium plans offer expanded capacity for professional VFX and imaging workflows.

Is EXR a large format?

EXR files can be large due to HDR data, but the format supports efficient compression to manage file sizes effectively.
