About formats

DivX is a family of video codecs and a media container format developed by DivX, LLC. The project traces its roots to a hacked version of the Microsoft MPEG-4 v3 codec that circulated in the late 1990s, but the legitimate DivX codec launched in January 2001 as an open-source project called OpenDivX before transitioning to a proprietary commercial product. The codec is based on MPEG-4 Part 2 (ASP) compression and later versions incorporated H.264/AVC and HEVC support. DivX gained enormous popularity in the early 2000s for its ability to compress a full-length movie into a file small enough to fit on a single CD-ROM while maintaining watchable visual quality. This compression efficiency made DivX a defining format of the early internet era, when bandwidth and storage were scarce resources. The DivX Media Format (.divx) container adds features like interactive menus, chapters, subtitles, and alternate audio tracks, bringing DVD-like functionality to digital files.
