ZIP is the most widely used archive format in computing, originally created by Phil Katz and released by PKWARE) on February 14, 1989 as part of the PKZIP utility for MS-DOS. The per-file compression architecture is another key strength: individual files can be extracted or updated without reprocessing the entire archive, and a corrupted entry does not affect other files.
