About formats

CAF (Core Audio Format) is a flexible audio container developed by Apple and introduced with Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger in 2005. Built to overcome limitations of older formats, CAF eliminates the 4 GB file size ceiling that constrains WAV and AIFF, theoretically supporting unlimited length. The container accommodates virtually any codec — AAC, ALAC, MP3, linear PCM, IMA ADPCM, and more — within a unified wrapper. Its chunk-based architecture stores audio alongside rich metadata including channel layouts, marker regions, annotations, and MIDI data. A defining advantage is handling extremely long recordings: broadcasters and field recordists can capture hours of continuous audio without size boundaries. Flexible codec support is another strength, as one container works whether the content is high-resolution 24-bit/192 kHz lossless audio or compressed speech. Apple's Core Audio framework provides native support on macOS and iOS, ensuring low-latency playback in professional applications like Logic Pro and Final Cut Pro. For Apple ecosystem workflows requiring both versatility and scale, CAF is an exceptionally capable choice.

MAUD is an audio file format developed by MacroSystem for the Commodore Amiga platform, introduced in the early 1990s as part of their digital video and audio production tools. Built on the Amiga IFF (Interchange File Format) chunk architecture, MAUD files organize data into clearly delineated chunks — MHDR for the header, MDAT for sample data, and optional annotation chunks for metadata. The format supports mono and stereo layouts with bit depths of 8 or 16 bits and sample rates up to 48 kHz, which represented professional-grade specifications on Amiga hardware. Both signed linear PCM and A-law/mu-law encodings are available, offering a choice between fidelity and file size. MAUD saw primary use in the Amiga video production community, where MacroSystem Retina and VLab Motion boards demanded synchronized audio that the standard 8SVX format could not deliver. Conversion support exists today through SoX and libsndfile, ensuring vintage Amiga productions remain recoverable. Three distinct advantages stand out: clean IFF-based structure that any chunk-aware parser can navigate, 16-bit stereo capability ahead of typical Amiga audio, and lightweight overhead that left maximum CPU headroom for video rendering.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert CAF to MAUD?

Apple's CAF format is powerful but niche. Moving to MAUD makes your recordings compatible with mainstream audio tools.

What opens MAUD audio?

MAUD can be opened with Amiga audio players, SoX, Audacity. Most modern audio applications handle this format without issues.

Will I lose audio quality in the conversion?

Quality depends on the codec. If MAUD uses lossy encoding, minor data loss occurs. Lossless targets preserve the original CAF audio faithfully.

Can I convert several CAF recordings at once?

Yes — upload multiple CAF files simultaneously and convert them all to MAUD in a single batch. No need to process one at a time.

Is the CAF to MAUD conversion secure?
