JPEG is one of the most widely used image formats in computing, standardized by the Joint Photographic Experts Group and published as ISO/IEC 10918-1 in September 1992. The .jpeg extension is functionally identical to .jpg — both contain the same JFIF or Exif-wrapped JPEG compressed image data. The format applies lossy compression using the discrete cosine transform (DCT): images are divided into 8x8 pixel blocks, transformed into frequency coefficients, quantized to discard visually less significant information, and entropy-coded for storage.
